A Beginners Guide to Oscar Wilde Oscar Wilde would have celebrated his 159th birthday earlier this week. He is one of those writers who wrote a bit of everything, including poems, essays, childrens stories, plays like The Importance of Being Earnest,  and one single novel,  The Portrait of Dorian Gray.  Wilde was a victim of Victorian attitudes toward sexuality. He served two years in prison for the alleged crime of gross indecency with another man. His story is one that has resonated with  the artistic community for decades, and he is viewed by many as a pioneer in the struggle for gay rights. on the occasion of his 150th birthday, the first of the videos below was commissioned to pay tribute to the man both his writing and his life. Why Does Matter Change State

You have observed matter changing state, like when an ice cube melts from a solid into liquid water or the water boils into vapor, but do you know why a substance changes from? Decreased temperature reverses the progression, so a gas may become a liquid which may freeze into a solid. Pressure plays a role, too. The particles of a substance seek the most stable configuration. Sometimes the combination of temperature and pressure permits a substance to skip phase transition, so a solid can go directly to the gas phase or a gas may become a solid, with no liquid intermediate state. Other forms of energy besides thermal energy can change the state of matter. For example, adding electrical energy can ionize atoms and change a gas into plasma. Energy from light can break chemical bonds to change a solid into a liquid.  Often, types of energy are absorbed by a material and change into thermal energy.

Immigrants thrived to the country’s political and economical system mainly because the country offers stability to them compared to their homelands. The fact that there exists a huge gap between Third World economy compared to America’s, immigrants would rather maintain their composure in dealing with discriminations and prejudices than returning home loosing hope to survive the next days, weeks and years to come. They consider the fact that a day’s living in America may take a week or two if they are in their homelands.In 1986, exactly 100 years after the commemoration of Liberty’s arrival in the United States, the Statue of Liberty still greets the visitors and immigrants of various countries. When a prediction of 20 million workers need by 2026 was made, (Rapidimmigration, 2005) greater opportunity lies ahead of aspiring immigrants to try their luck in crossing the borders. But the flow of the migrants every year threatens Americans and policy makers at the same time. While the Statue of Liberty continuously greets visitors and immigrants along New York, many people think that the immigration policy has been too lenient that a review should be made. Competition between immigrants and natural born citizens is too stiff that the latter feel they are over empowered and that are taken for granted in most ways. Jobs are offered to the immigrants because of the low wage given to them. Immigrants further enjoy the kind of services the natural born citizens enjoy, thus, disallowing gaps in socioeconomic matters.In line with this issue, legislations were reviewed and in 1882, immigration open door policy has ended when the Chinese were suspended to enter in the United States for 10 years. Chinese were declared ineligible for citizenship under the Chinese Exclusion Act. (Mooney, Knox, and Schacht, 2002). In order to limit the numbers of immigrants in the country further, series of laws were enacted between 1917-1924 imposing quota systems particularly, passing the literacy test before an immigrant enters the country. This was the Immigration Act of 1917, which was followed by Johnson Act in 1921 where the latter allowed limited number of immigrants per year adding stricter requirements according to the immigrants’ countries. In 1986, thousands of illegal migrants were legalized but at the same time, company-employer sanctions were initiated for such employer who will hire illegal migrants. Moving forward and because of the terrorism issues and one of the great contributors in the immigration issues is the USA Patriot Act of 2001 aimed to intercept and obstruct terrorism at all cost. . Thousands of young soldiers were sent to the Middle East and President Bush continues to fight the war against terrorism. Due to the increasing warfare expenditures, America’s economy now faces tremendous breakdown—oil price increase, job outsourcing resulting to unemployment, health care issues and the like. Further, most employers are hiring immigrants because of the consideration on the amount of salary/wage given to them compared to natural born Americans. With these issues at hand, Senate considered the possibilities of renewing the issues on immigration policies.One of the initiatives for economic welfare is to save war money in tightening the borders instead. Associated Press reports that President Bush requested for a cut of the Iraq’s budget amounting to $1.9 billion to be spent in buying â€Å"new aircrafts, patrol boats and other vehicles as well as border checkpoints and fence along Mexico boarder crossing near San Diego.† (Taylor, A., 2006) With this matter at hand, it is but inevitable to ask consider if Liberty still keeps her golden doors open for the â€Å"poor, huddled masses and homeless.† (Wikepedia, 2006). Because of this, and because America is country of honor, the almost 11 million immigrants cannot be just sent home or deport to some other places. The cost of sending these immigrants would cripple the country’s economy and lawmakers need to evaluate this matter at the same time. If on the other hand, all of these 11 million immigrants could pass the examinations for them to be naturalized citizens of America, a population boom might threaten the economy as well.Whatever be the cost, America should reconsider the humanity side of adopting or welcoming these immigrants and consider their great contribution to the American Society. The key to getting the most out of your science fair project is to start working on it as soon as possible! If you wait until the last minute you will feel rushed, which leads to feelings of frustration and anxiety, which makes good science harder than it needs to be. These steps for developing a science project work, even if you procrastinate until the last possible minute, but your experience wont be as much fun! Science Fair Project Ideas Some people are brimming with great science project ideas. If you are one of those lucky students, feel free to skip to the next section. If, on the other hand, the brainstorming part of the project is your first hurdle, read on! Coming up with ideas isnt a matter of brilliance. Its a matter of practice! Dont try to come up with only one idea and make it work. Come up with lots of ideas. First: think about what interests you. If your science project is restricted to a subject, then think about your interests within those limits. This is a chemistry site, so Ill use chemistry as an example. Chemistry is a huge, broad category. Are you interested in foods? properties of materials? toxins? drugs? chemical reactions? salt? tasting colas? Go through everything you can think of that relates to your broad topic and write down anything that sounds interesting to you. Dont be timid. Give yourself a brainstorming time limit (like 15 minutes), enlist the help of friends, and dont stop thinking or writing until the time is up. If you cant think of anything that interests you about your subject (hey, some classes are required, but not everyones cup of tea, right?), then force yourself to think up and write down every topic under that subject until your time is up. Write down broad topics, write down specific topics. Write anything that comes to mind - have fun! See, there are LOTS of ideas! If you were desperate, you had to resort to ideas on websites or in your textbook, but you should have some ideas for projects. Now, you need to narrow them down and refine your idea into a workable project. Science is based on the scientific method, which means you need to come up with a testable hypothesis for a good project. Basically, you need to find a question about your topic that you can test to find an answer. Look over your idea list (dont be afraid to add to it at any time or cross off items that you dont like... its your list, after all) and write down questions that you can ask and can test. There are some questions you cant answer because you dont have the time or the materials or the permission to test. With respect to time, think of a question that can be tested over a fairly short time span. Avoid panic and dont try to answer questions that take most of the time you have for the entire project. An example of a question that can be answered quickly: Can cats be right or left pawed? Its a simple yes or no question. You can get preliminary data (assuming you have a cat and a toy or treats) in a matter of seconds, and then determine how you will construct a more formal experiment. (My data indicates yes, a cat can have a paw preference. My cat is left-pawed, just in case you are wondering.) This example illustrates a couple of points. First, yes/no, positive/negative, more/less/same, quantitative questions are easier to test/answer than value, judgement, or qualitative questions. Second, a simple test is better than a complicated test. If you can, plan to test one simple question. If you combine variables (Like determining whether paw use varies between males and females or according to age), you will make your project infinitely more difficult. Heres a first chemistry question: What concentration of salt (NaCl) needs to be in water before you can taste it? If you have a calculator, measuring utensils, water, salt, tongue, pen, and paper, youre set! Then you can proceed to the next section on experimental design. Still stumped? Take a break and go back to the brainstorming section later. If you are having a mental block, you need to relax in order to overcome it. Do something that relaxes you, whatever that may be. Play a game, take a bath, go shopping, exercise, meditate, do housework... as long as you get your mind off of the subject for a bit. Come back to it later. Enlist help from family and friends. Repeat as necessary and then continue to the next step.
